To encourage students to develop self-directed learning abilities, Yuan Ze University’s International Language and Culture Center actively innovated its teaching models by collaborating with the online learning platform Hahow and the Longzhong Rising Education Foundation.
In April, they officially launched the “Online Self-Directed Learning Competition.” On the first day of registration, the event attracted over a hundred enthusiastic students, demonstrating strong passion for learning and a spirit of self-challenge.
The competition broke away from the framework of traditional classroom learning. It integrated over a hundred multilingual and workplace skills courses offered by Hahow for Campus and combined them with the Longzhong Foundation’s “Quirky Project” documentary series focused on social issues. Students were guided to design their learning paths based on personal interests and goals, embodying Yuan Ze University’s student-centered teaching philosophy and innovative spirit in education.
Chen Hsin-Hung, Director of the International Language and Culture Center, stated that the competition was designed with high flexibility and diverse options. Students could freely choose courses on the platform and track their learning progress through the system, which enhanced both their motivation and sense of accomplishment. The competition consisted of two phases: the first phase limited enrollment to 200 students, who then underwent a selection process before advancing to the second phase, which involved actual course learning and outcome evaluations. The top ten performers would be selected at the end of the program.
Chen further noted that the selected winners would receive online course resources worth a total of NT$90,000. They would also have the opportunity to participate in company visits and design workshops curated by Hahow, gaining insights into the operational models and marketing strategies of online education platforms, truly putting the idea of “integrating learning and application” into practice.
One participant, a student surnamed Lin, shared that the competition was the first time learning felt entirely self-directed. “Choosing courses based on my interests made learning so much more enjoyable!”
Chen emphasized that the goal of this collaboration was to create a platform that supports students in self-exploration and personal growth. While learning could be a personalized journey, growth required collective dialogue and interaction—this was the core philosophy behind the project.
Kao Yu-Tsung, Operations Director of Hahow for Campus, also remarked that the demand for flexible learning among the new generation continued to rise. She expressed her honor in partnering with Yuan Ze University to make self-directed learning not just a slogan, but a genuine part of students’ daily lives.
This collaboration not only reflected Yuan Ze University's commitment to digital learning and interdisciplinary integration but also marked a significant milestone in advancing innovation in higher education. Moving forward, Yuan Ze plans to expand its learning resources and platforms further to create a more flexible and future-oriented learning environment, empowering every student to pursue a meaningful and self-directed learning journey based on their interests and potential.
